One event on the calendar that many people look forward to is the annual ASB Auckland Marathon. For those who live in Auckland, we are reminded about the event all year round with countless runners sporting their official Auckland Marathon t-shirt whilst they run past us on the street but we definitely get what all the fuss is about – it’s a big deal to run across the harbour bridge which is usually only open to vehicles so we are not surprised to see the huge numbers turning out every year.

Whilst the Auckland Marathon sponsored by ASB is undoubtedly the star of the show, there are also a number of other runs that take place on the day including the equally popular Barfoot and Thompson Half Marathon. Both of these big runs start off in the same place across the water over in Devonport where runners are transported by ferry from the city very early in the morning. The route then take runners up to the North Shore to Takapuna before turning towards the city and the run over the iconic Harbour Bridge. For those first timers, don’t underestimate how steep the bridge climb actually is and make sure you save some energy as you will no doubt be buzzing with adrenaline.

After crossing the bridge the run then heads along the city’s waterfront and on to Mission Bay before turning back at St Helier’s Bay. The first half of the course is described as ‘rolling’ whereas once you cross the bridge, bar a couple of smaller road bridges, the route is very flat making it ideal for first timers.

If you are looking for something challenging but you’re not ready for a full or half marathon, then the 12k John West Traverse may be just up your street, still giving you the opportunity to cross the Harbour Bridge after starting at Smales Farm and finishing at Victoria Park in the city.

Keeping up to date

Athletes and spectators can download the official Auckland Marathon App which includes handy course maps, live athlete tracking to help supporters as well as direct access to timing results.

When is the Auckland Marathon 2016?

The Auckland Marathon finish line

Have you got what it takes to cross this finish line and take on the Auckland Marathon?

So, now you know a bit more about the race, it’s time to decide whether you want to take part in this year’s race! Entries are still open for all events and this year the Auckland Marathon will be held on Sunday 30 October and entries are open right up until 5.00pm on Monday 24 October so it’s not too late. We recommend that only those with a good level of basic fitness should be thinking about entering the full or half marathon at this stage – it takes months to get the body into shape to run such a testing distance, however the 12km race is perfect for those who are active and want to try something new.

You can find out lots more information about the race including race maps, entry information and prices on the office Auckland Marathon website.
