For those people choosing to stay with us at one of our two Auckland hotels, no trip to the City of Sails is complete without a trip over to historic Devonport. Situated just a short 15 minute ferry ride across the harbour from downtown Auckland city, Devonport gives you the chance to step back from the hustle and bustle of the big city and take a breath to admire the magnificent city views or stroll through the leafy town centre with its quirky shops and lovely outdoor cafes.

Despite the slightly slower pace of life across the harbour there is still plenty to keep you occupied with some beautiful beaches and not one but two volcanic peaks to explore. Here is a list of our top 5 things to do on a trip over to Devonport:

1.      Mount Victoria Lookout

Mount Victoria is the highest volcanic cone on Auckland’s north shore and a climb to the top will give you stunning 360° views of the city skyline and the Waitemata harbour. It’s also a great workout climbing to the top and the views are always worth it.

2.      North Head Historic Reserve

Another of Devonport’s volcanic peaks, North Head Historic Reserve is a great place to go and explore. With a complex military tunnel system, North Head is one of the most significant coastal defence sites in New Zealand. Perfect for history buffs or just an explore with the family – grab a picnic from the town before you head up and enjoy the stunning views over Auckland and beyond.

3.      Naval Museum

The Torpedo Bay Naval Museum is the perfect place to learn about Devonport’s links with New Zealand’s Navy. This is the perfect place to take the family as kids get to explore the museum gallery activities whilst the adults can take a guided tour and learn more about New Zealand’s naval history. Entry to the museum is free and getting there involves a lovely stroll along the promenade. The pier situated next to the Naval Museum also provides great views back towards the city.

4.      Beautiful Beaches

Devonport is a great place to head if you are looking to soak up the sun with a number of safe swimming beaches all offering up great views back towards the city. The beaches are also a great place to sit back, relax and take a time out from the world. Grab a coffee from one of the excellent cafes and a good book and take a couple of hours to unwind with the sand between your toes.

5.      Segway Adventures

Whilst there are loads of other cool things to do in Devonport, we wanted to add something that’s a little unusual but pretty awesome! If you have never tried it, this is the perfect place to give segwaying a go! This is Auckland’s only guided Segway tour and is a novel and exciting way to explore the town.

We absolutely love a trip over on the ferry to Devonport and it’s a great way to spend a morning, afternoon or even the whole day. Give it a go the next time you’re in Auckland.
